Shropshire Warriors Basketball Programme
Presented by:

Shropshire Warriors Basketball Programme
Shropshire Basketball Association’s “Representative” Club.

It provides opportunities for the most talented and committed Basketball players in the County to receive regular high quality coaching and to participate against similarly talented and committed players in Regional and or National League competition.

Where we have come from?
The Club was established
in 1998 by members of the Committee of the Shropshire Schools Basketball Association (SSBBA) and the Shropshire Basketball Association
to provide opportunities for the most talented and ambitious players in full time education in Shropshire to play regular competitive basketball at higher than Inter-School level
Where have we come from?
Our aim was:
to run “age group development squads” which receive expert tuition on a weekly basis under the guidance of experienced coaches and
to provide opportunities for the maximum number of teams to represent us in weekly competitive National League games.

Where are we now ?
The Club has grown massively over the last 12 years to a point where it is now the largest club in the West Midlands and:
annually averages 200 + members
has been Clubmark accredited for 3 years
is one of only 16 Clubs to be 4 Star rated under terms of the EB Club Accreditation scheme – there are only 4 x 5 Star Clubs
has hosted two highly successful professional BBL matches
has recently taken the first step towards professional BBL status by entering the Senior National League

Our Coaching Team…..
In 1998 we had just two qualified coaches working
In 2010 the Club now has one of the largest and most active teams of NGB qualified and CRB checked coaches in the Country
No less than 5 are Level 3 Coaches (Senior National Coaches), and a further 8 are currently completing their Level 3 Award
Our most recent Coaching acquisition is Shawn Jamison, the ex NBA, Harlem Globetrotters, and BBL star
The Club invests heavily in the on-going professional development of all our Coaches, and runs annual Coach Award Courses

Junior teams …….
Senior teams …..

Our Senior Men’s and Senior Women’s Teams play in the West Midlands Premier Leagues, the highest level of Basketball in the region.
These squads provide an invaluable “exit route” for our most talented youngsters into high quality senior basketball
In 2010 we have entered a senior men’s team in the EBL League Division 4
Team successes
Junior Men’s squad were Champions of Midlands Division in 2002
Under 14 Girls squad finished third in the National Championships in 2005
U14/15/16/18 teams have regularly reached national play-offs. In 2009/10 our U14 Boys and Junior Men both reached the play offs
Senior Women were runners up in the West Midlands Premier league in 2005/6, 2006/7 and 2009/2010, and champions in 2008/9
Premier Men’s squad have contended for the Premier league championship annually and are the reigning 2009 / 10 Champions

Achievements - Individual successes
How is our programme supported?

We have received an a small annual grant from the Shropshire Schools Sports and Athletic Association to pay towards facility hire and transport, as our Junior teams represent the Shropshire Schools Basketball Association – this funding is likely to cease in 2010
For many years we received an RAF Club Development grant – this funding ceased in 2008
Our generous main sponsor has been “Inprints and Sportserve” who have provided team uniforms from their “Team Spirit” brand range, practice match balls and trophies for our end of season presentations
How is our programme supported?
Over the years we have had use of Ercall Wood, Bennetts Bank, Thomas Telford and RAF Cosford.
However, e currently use Sport TCAT as our main training and match venue, and also use the Shrewsbury Sports Village, Charlton School and Thomas Telford as additional facilities. Court Hire is notoriously expensive
To enable us to cover costs we have carried out various fund-raising activities to support club operations, including the Bridgnorth Walk
However, the vast majority of our expenditure costs are met through club membership fees, weekly and match training fees and volunteer commitment

We have a long standing relationship with the College dating back to the inception of our programme
In 1998 Doug Boynton sponsored our programme by purchasing our first 2 kits, and allowing us use of Bennetts Bank
Since then we have always promoted the College by wearing the TCAT logo on our coaches shirts and player’s warm-up tops

In 2003 we helped establish the Basketball Academy, with the vast majority of the Academy’s initial squad being Warriors members, and our links have been maintained with mutual benefit to both parties
Since opening the superb Sport TCAT arena in 2005 we have continued to train on a weekly basis, and play home matches there
We have been working closely with TCAT to help further develop the existing Academy and be jointly awarded the new AASE apprentice player programme in 2010

Club Goals
We want to:
Retain EB 4 Star Accredited Club status and our “Clubmark” Accreditation which quality assures our operational systems
ensure that participation is based on a player’s ability to play rather than ability to pay
increase the profile of our programme and the sport across the County and thus have a broader base of players to draw upon
Operate Cadet, Junior Men’s and Women’s teams in their respective league premier divisions – ideally challenging for national titles
Promote the programme by providing an exit route to professional basketball arising from entering a Senior men’s team in EBL Division 4 in the 2010/11 season
increase competitive opportunities for all, including female players, wheelchair users and others with special needs

Looking to the future
We want to build on our excellent links with TCAT, and with the Shropshire and Telford and Wrekin Councils to develop our programme and the game of Basketball in general to the highest possible level. We need to:
Identify new sponsors and partners with a long term commitment to help us sustain programme development and minimise costs of participation
Increase our core of volunteers and develop incentives to maintain their involvement and sustain the future programme
Develop sustainable financial management to underpin our plans to progress into the professional game

True Partnership
Looking to the future

True Partnership brings mutual benefits and can open up external funding opportunities
More Players - working in partnership with local authorities increases the number of youngsters being taught the game in curriculum time and playing the game in extra-curricular time
More Training - We need to offer at least twice weekly training for all squads in order that they can improve the quality of their play, as most of our competitors do
More Volunteers (coaches/team managers/ officials) - to attract and develop additional coaches by using our “Coach Development and Mentoring Grant” to support more coaches to deliver the best possible coaching to our squads, and by running courses to up-skill referees and table officials

Building a stronger foundation
Increasing participation
The Warriors Club wants to:

raise the profile of the game of basketball to a point where it is the No 1 indoor sport in schools within Shropshire Telford and Wrekin
utilise our coaches to lead, on a paid basis, a curricular and extra curricular coaching programme in Primary and Secondary Schools across Shropshire Telford and Wrekin to ensure
that youngsters in Primary and Secondary Schools are taught the game well in curriculum time
more children receive extra curricular coaching, and have the opportunity to play the game competitively on a regular basis
support the development of a
network of Clubs – placed strategically across Shropshire Telford and Wrekin into which youngsters and interested adults could feed and a Central Venue League in which Schools and Clubs can play

Ideas for promoting excellence …..
EBL academy status for TCAT
AASE apprenticeship programme raises performance
Warriors Division 4 team provides an exit route for male players and their competitive games build spectator numbers
Telford becomes renowned as a Basketball venue, alongside American football and Ice Hockey
Sport TCAT a national training and match venue
